Rotating Mastheads
Behind the scenes, I have been assembling a small collection of zhx.home mastheads. Today I finished up 2 more, bringing the total to 6, and I think that’s enough to enable a script to rotate them.
While Bonnie visits her parents, I messed around with a little PHP and got this thing going. Every time I add something to the site like this, it gets a little easier. This basically involved creating multiple CSS stylesheets that pointed to different mastheads and having the “random file” script grab one of these stylesheets at random when it renders the page.
Here are all of the mastheads (so far), along with a description:
This was the first masthead I created for the blog, an 8-bit cityscape. 20 retro-gaming points if you can name the game.
This is the second masthead I made, a spoof on PETA’s “I Am Not A Nugget” animal rights/blatant merchandising campaign. I made this at about 9AM, after being up all night. It was hilarious to me at the time, and I kept it. I still think it’s pretty funny.
This is a pixel art forum signature I used to use that I modified into a banner for the site. When I started using computers, those babies were your primary storage option, as hard disks were large and expensive. Deal with it.
This is an action shot a friend helped me take. The process was maybe just a little complicated: My friend held the camera on a tripod, upside down and near the ground while riding a bike down a hill. We’d set the timer shot, he’d start pedalling, and I’d bomb the hill to catch up with him. He would then try to match my speed and use the LCD on the back of the camera to keep me framed while it exposed. This took us about an hour and a half to get right…

This is a masthead I whipped up today while listening to some Black Flag. I figured it’d be a simple job, and a quick addition to my masthead collection.
This is a masthead I actually started several weeks ago but never finished. I had completely forgotten about it until I went to save my Black Flag one and saw it in my “masters” folder. This is me performing a pop shove-it tailgrab a friend of mine snapped at about sunrise at the skatepark. After a ton of Photoshop manipulation, I ended up with this.
Oh, I also added a plugin that shows my AOL Instant Messenger status.
