Ubuntu Linux

Well, I’ve decided to ditch Windows completely on my laptop, and formatted last night. At first I wanted a “middle-road” distro to help ease the transition, which I found in Xandros. Xandros is a great distribution, with an absolutely painless installation and configuration (all hardware worked out of the box), but something didn’t feel right. Xandros tries very hard to make itself a “Windows clone” so users aren’t intimidated. For whatever reason, I didn’t feel comfortable in it, and decided to give Ubuntu Linux another go.

Ubuntu has stormed the Linux scene recently, quickly climbing the ranks to top the popularity of even Fedora and Mandriva. Something about using Ubuntu feels very special, and unlike a lot of the major distributions, it is free, free, free. I even sent off for Ubuntu CDs to give out, which don’t cost you a dime. You can order as many as you want, for whatever platform you want, and even shipping is covered. It doesn’t get much freer than that. They are committed to the open source principle 100%.

The system is great; all my hardware was detected perfectly, and I have been having a blast configuring it to my tastes. I’ll be posting results in the near future, but in the meantime I took a couple minutes out to make an Ubuntu-themed masthead for the site.
