Fuck Skate Contests

All, Skateboarding August 27th, 2005

Well, I choked.

Competition got pretty thin after about 24 inches, and about 6 guys were competing past that. I knew I could place, I was positive, but I can’t skate under pressure; my legs were shaking. You don’t really think about it until they set the bar up and you hear your name called, and there’s a billion people watching…

I fucked up on ALL THREE TRIES at 30 inches, which is cake. I just couldn’t feel my legs.

But it wasn’t just the pressure. Add to that my skinned knee (which hurt to bend), and the fact that Bonnie promised to make it back into town to be there for it, but then didn’t follow through…and you have a sweet ego-crushing competition.

As soon as I finished my last attempt, I turned around, without saying anything to anybody, cut my way through the crowd, and just skated home. Didn’t even bother to see who placed in high ollie, or watch the other half of the contest.

This happened last year too. I don’t know why I keep subjecting myself to this, because all it does is make me want to not skate. Competition doesn’t belong in skateboarding.

Sorry, dude. Yeah, I don’t think I was ever good enough (or maybe ballsy enough is more accurate) to compete and I never really wanted to either.
