A New Hangout

All, Music October 17th, 2005

There’s a reason I haven’t mentioned I’m in a band, and that’s because it’s lame to go around announcing that. Hell, who isn’t in a band? However, I’m so excited about our new jamming location, ranting about how cool the second story of my dad’s fort is wouldn’t make any sense without letting you in on my dirty little secret.

So we’ve been together, if you want to call it that, for about a year or so under the name Troutmouth. No, we don’t think we’re going to ‘make it’. No, we don’t have dozens of local junior high girl fans. We don’t have a Purevolume account, or a Myspace account, or a demo, or a fucking t-shirt. It’s more of a goofy weekend thing, because messing around on instruments is a lot of fun.

Unfortunately, practices are few and far inbetween because we are limited to playing out at a warehouse that has been rented out to several friends over the past several years. This warehouse is about a 20 minute drive out of town, near the airport, and the only luxury it provides is electricity. There are no bathrooms or…*gasp* heat, and in the dead of a Wy-fuckin-oming winter, your fingers don’t move if there isn’t heat. This warehouse also costs money, and with as little as we actually get out there, it’s just not worth it.

Finally, in a cathartic revelation, I remembered my dad has spent the past 4 years building his shop, which I refer to as his ‘fort’, and that the (unfinished) 2nd story is basically unused, saved for some random machinery storage. I confronted him about clearing out a corner to practice in a couple times a week, and strangely, he was really cool with it. So today, we went about stacking wood, moving crap, and sweeping up dirt and sawdust to create our band’s new home. We then (barely) crammed all our equipment into Justin’s truck and took it back home to set it all back up. There was even a bit of a fun adventure hauling the larger amps up through the 2nd story’s trap door with the electric hoist. I don’t know what it is; the cozy feeling of being in a secluded loft of sorts, the fact that we now enjoy both electricity AND heat, or knowing that we now play for an involuntary audience, but I am totally in love with the new location.

Anyway, entirely pointless post, but it’s my blog, my webspace, and my computer, so deal with it.

But I already knew you were in a band. You told me that tidbit ages ago…
