Sony’s Sweet New DRM Bullshit
Man, just when I thought there was no possible way I could loathe Sony more than I already do, they introduce an AWESOME new DRM…”technique”, which basically roots your Windows box in order to keep you from “abusing” BMG audio CDs.
Yes, buy a CD from Sony, toss it in your computer, and you must “OK” a license agreement. No big deal, right? Well, it wouldn’t be, if the software didn’t go behind your back and go ahead and change some registry entries, among other things. While you’re enjoying your shitty music, Sony has fucked your computer: Attempting to uninstall yourself will render your CD-ROM inoperable, the process itself consumes some CPU clock cycles, even when idle, and let’s not forget the fact that your system has been ROOTED, and all it takes for somebody else to wreak havoc on your system is to basically access it, and good ol’ Sony has given them an easy path to their own admin privileges.
Do you people get it? What more does Sony have to do to turn you off of their terrible products? This is clearly crossing the DRM line between copyright protection and downright INTRUSION. Sony has no say over what you do with your computer…unless you want to listen to their music, in which case they’ll gladly step in and tell you exactly how you’re allowed to use the disc YOU BOUGHT (and invariably spent way too much money on in the first place).
Fuck Sony. Stop purchasing their products.
