Sony’s DRM Bullshit Round 3
So Sony has dropped their rootkit ‘copyright protection’, but another interesting development has come to light:
The source for it contains a good deal of open-source software, in the form of a portion of the LAME MP3 encoder. LAME isn’t licensed under the GNU public license, but under the LGPL, which states that if you use LGPL licensed source code in your project, you must acknowledge its use and release the source to your program for free. It’s a moot point now, since Sony has canned the scheme, but it could have been interesting to see where this went, had they kept the program in place.
