Customizing My New Phone

All, Computers July 8th, 2006

Ringtones are just about the biggest racket out there. I think it’s funny when people complain about the cost of CDs or legal music downloads, and see no problem spending $2-$3 on a 15 second clip of their favorite song for their phone. Well I don’t believe in paying for anything I don’t have to, including data transfer cables for my cell phone. Fortunately, when I plugged my phone in to charge last night, I noticed the Razr uses a very standard 5-pin mini USB connection. Curious, I plugged my phone into a mini USB cable I have and my computer recognized it, but could not find a driver. I was able to track down a driver online so that I could charge my phone through my USB ports, but my computer was still not detecting it as a mobile device.

After some more digging around, I managed to “borrow” a copy of Motorola’s Mobile Phone Tools software, and have since been making my own wallpapers and ringtones. Carefully ripping clips from an emulator, I have begun work on an obnoxious, NES-themed tone package. Here’s a sample of what I have come up with so far:

Super Mario Bros. Ringtone

Mega Man 2 Voicemail Tone

“1up” Text Message Tone

That’s awesome that you’re making ring tones for cell phones! Can’t wait to hear one playing while I’m stuck behind some Motherfucker in line who is shooshing the clerk while texting his entire family!

Errr… typo, please replace “Motherfucker” with “balding in the midst of a middle life crisis Motherfucker (yes capital ‘M’) desperately trying to prove to the world that he’s important and failing to realize that driving a Hummer doesn’t change the fact that he has a stack of dimes for a dick and will die lonely and without his existence being validated.”

Sweet man. My Windows Mobile phone has the same USB cable, and it’s actually made to connect with the computer. It’s really simple to make ringtones for mine, pretty much plug and play, and I have a good dozen ringtones of my favorite songs. I just downloaded all of these, though. I hadn’t thought of making my own for voice mail and the like. Sweeet. Thanks!

and mother feels obliged to “chime” in with her paranoid (though in the era of Bush maybe not so delusionally paranoid) admonition about admitting to illegal activity so openly
