My Camera’s In!
Well, when you order 2nd day air, UPS clearly does not fuck around.
Nice one, UPS.
…but it’s here! My initial reaction after tearing the box open was “NO WAY!”, then a sort of sinking feeling set in: “This is entirely too much camera for me”. I screwed the lens on, secured the strap on (last thing I want to do is drop this thing…), and just started snapping photos of everything. Didn’t matter what was in the viewfinder, I just wanted to snap photos of everything in sight. Of course, this was in auto mode. It wasn’t until a couple hours later that a friend came over and we actually sat down with the manual and slowly figured out what each of the 3 zillion buttons and dials do, and I shot in full manual all night. I’m not quite as confident shooting with it as I was with the old Sony F717, but it’s been in my possession less than 24 hours. I’m totally in love with shooting on an SLR, and the old Sony, which seemed like a “big” camera to me at the time, feels small and flimsy now.

Complete with lens hood.
Cameron and I spent several hours covering just about every feature on the camera: double and triple exposures, auto bracketing, burst shooting, and a bunch of different shutter/flash combinations (rear curtain flash, burst flash/shooting, etc). I wish the burst firing shot a little faster than 3fps (for skateboard sequences) but that’s really my only nitpicky problem with it so far. The only other crappy thing is I placed my 2gb SD card on the same order as the remote (which is backordered until, Amazon claims, MARCH), so I don’t get my memory card until the remote becomes available. Until then, I’m shooting on my dinky 256mb SD card (that I bought for my Wii), and at the highest settings (highest JPG settings…), it stores 32 photos. If I shoot in RAW, it can hold less than half of that. I briefly looked around online for a portable hard drive for photographers, and considered dropping another $150 on a 40gb photo storage drive when I realized that there almost HAD to be an accessory that would let me hook my camera to my iPod. I was right, and I will be spending $30 in the near future to get an adaptor that will let me directly dump my SD card to my iPod, which I carry with me everywhere anyway.
I’d like to go shoot outdoors, but it’s 10 below ridiculous outside, as well as icy, muddy, and slushy. Maybe it will warm up this week. In the meantime, here’s a couple shots of my dog I took while figuring out the camera’s controls, partially because he’s my only willing model, but mostly because he’s so goddamn photogenic. I’m also experimenting with a couple different approaches to black and white conversion in Photoshop.

Meaning, for a dude, you make a pretty good looking lady. I’m not the only dude that thinks chicks with beards are hot? Right?
