Working with RAW

All, Photography January 30th, 2007

Realized yesterday that I didn’t have a case to protect my new investment and went down to the camera store and picked up a nice little Tamrac bag for $40 or so. Adding lenses to my collection is probably quite a ways off, so this little bag should do the trick for quite a while. When my equipment warrants it, I’d like to get a camera backpack, but they’re SOOOO expensive.

Anyway, the idea of a new tripod simmered in my head at work all day after that, and I skipped out a couple minutes early to head BACK to the camera store and dumped another $185 on a nice tripod. This was one of the “cheap” tripods they had; some models cost more than my camera. Since it’s still ridiculously cold outside, I decided to set the tripod up in the living room and mess around with RAW files in Photoshop, since I’ve never done it before.

I ended up shooting a flower Amanda gave me about 3 months ago. It’s been sitting on my entertainment center in a Heineken bottle ever since, and I set it up against a white wall with only overhead light to illuminate it. Here’s what I got (after bringing my whites up to get me the clean background, of course):

Really need to get outside to shoot…
