My Concert Lens

All, Photography February 12th, 2007

I attempted some live music photography on my old Sony camera and got barely passable results. And as I mentioned before, the lens I got with my SLR is a great lens, but not so hot for indoor or low-light photography (f/3.5). The next lens on my shopping list is Nikon’s 10.5mm fisheye, which I want specifically for skateboarding photography, but at $600, it’s a ways off. Since my skateboard photography is limited, I would like to be shooting more local bands, and I also wanted a simple, fast prime lens for indoor/everyday use. Fortunately, I didn’t realize the price difference was so huge between zooms and primes. So today for about $115, I picked up a Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lens (brand new, with warranty) for just these purposes.

This lens is nearly twice as sensitive to light as my current 18-135mm, and half as bulky, making it ideal for live music shots. It should be here Friday, and the next time a decent local band plays, expect lots of concert photos.
