New Hard Drive

All, Computers March 8th, 2007

Though I have four of them already, my hard drive situation isn’t looking so good: I’m down to just under 200gbs free. Now that may sound like a lot, but when you collect software, ROMs and ISOs, TV series, full length movies, skate videos, and dozens of albums a month…and add to that a new high-res digital photography obsession, it goes fast. Fortunately for me, hard drives are dirt cheap these days.

I remember less than two years ago, you could figure about $1 per GB; a 160gb hard drive (huge at the time) would run you $150-$180 or so. Hell, even a year ago when I built my new computer, my 300gb HDDs were a big deal. I was surprised, then, when I went to make an investment in a 500gb drive, and it ran me about 30 cents a GB. My 1gb cards for my camera cost $50 a piece; $150 is not a problem to increase my hard drive space by another 50%. I also picked up a sexy metal external enclosure for it so I can schlep it around if I have to. I plan on partitioning it into two drives to house my Lightroom photo database and MP3s, since I outgrew my 80gb MP3 drive quite a while ago.

It just came in today, and I’m hooking it up now. That takes me to 1.5 Japanese terabytes, kids.

Is it kind of weird or annoying that it says METAL GEAR BOX on the side/bottom of the enclosure?

I welcome the obvious video game reference.

I was thinking about that. Does it also transport rations and cigarettes?

    Haha, most likely.
