Guitar Experiment

All, Music October 24th, 2007

I purchased my acoustic guitar almost exactly one year ago, and thought I’d try a fun experiment. The DAY I bought my guitar, I attempted to multitrack on my computer and layer a couple guitar parts over each other, which I performed. I chose the chorus of Weezer’s Jamie, and recorded a small clip that, despite sounding awful, I still had laying around on my computer. I thought it would be fun to re-record the same thing a year later and see if there’s a noticeable difference in my guitar playing. This comparison isn’t TOTALLY fair, because I set up a little better recording situation for this attempt, but there is also definitely an audible difference in my ability.

Here’s the first clip, which I recorded October 27, 2006. At the time I only “played” bass, so I basically understood how guitar worked, but really had no idea what I was doing. I didn’t even know the names of the chords I was playing, or what my finger placement meant — only where to put them. It shows. I also REALLY struggle with that B just before the 13 second mark. Oi. This was just a couple hours after I bought the guitar, and the strings on it were terrible, so it produces an almost sitar-like sound at times on top of everything else.

Here’s the clip I recorded this afternoon. I added a couple extra little embellishments, and the recording itself is a little higher quality, but there is obvious improvement in the playing itself. I’m pleased. Not bad for only really playing the guitar for a year, I’d guess.
