    Holy shit, Soch is allergic to alcohol? My token Asian friend down in Florida is as well. Coincidence!?

    Well I know a lot of Asian people turn really red when they drink…but that doesn’t necessarily mean “allergic reaction”. Here’s something about it from the Wiki article on alcohol flush reaction:

    The first step toward metabolizing alcohol is to convert it to acetaldehyde. It has been found that 50% of the Pacific Rim Asian population (Chinese, Japanese, Koreans) possess an atypical alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) known as ADH2*2 that leads to unusually rapid conversion of ethanol to acetaldehyde. This atypical ADH is less frequently found in Caucasians, African Americans, Native Americans, and Asian Indians (Agarwal and Goedde, 1992). Since acetaldehyde is more toxic than alcohol, its increased accumulation causes flushing in the human body.

    i know i am a little late on reading this, but i find this really interesting. I got drunk one night at a party with a Korean friend from work, and he became extremely funny, and very red as well. And that fact that he became more and more red the drunker he became, was amazing. He later puked in a car. Wasn’t there for that…
