Best Part of the State of the Union Address

All, Religion/Politics January 29th, 2008

This slayed me:

Bush: America opposes genocide in Sudan.
*Standing ovation*

Hahaha, what? That’s not a given? Way to draw the line on the mother of all wedge issues, genocide; good to know where we stand. I imagine that got a standing ovation because everybody was afraid that if they didn’t stand, it would look like they support genocide. “Oh, genocide? That’s the really bad one! I better stand while I clap this time!”

I dunno, I guess I’m just kind of indifferent to the whole thing.

  2. zhx Says:

Oh, I always thought you were super pro-genocide. Learn something every day.

  3. Buttsauce Says:

Well, I was pretty into the whole, one clean race thing when I was still “coming into my own.”

But these days, I just see it as more of a cry for attention, so I try to turn the cheek so to say.

  4. mom Says:

Of course, we don’t actually DO anything about genocide in Sudan. But that’s probably because we know it’s better to torture them and make them suffer rather than killing them straight out.

  5. Buttsauce Says:

It makes for better State of the Union addresses.

Although this last year, Bush and his cabinet did make a huge uproar about America finally “recognizing” the Armenian genocide in Turkey. His basis for opposing it was that it “would harm U.S. security interests”. So his comments last night just make him seem that the genocide in Sudan is not good, not genocide in general. He can live with genocide if his interests are not effected in a negative way.

  7. Soch Says:

I fuckin’ missed American Gladiators because this shit was on.

Why do we have a state of the union address in an election year in the president’s second term? Shouldn’t his only legislative plans be getting the fuck out of office? Is the South threatening secession again? Oh no just the same old shit propagandhi warns us about.
“It is my distinct pleasure to introduce you to a loving father of 2 and a champion of the sanctioned use of armed force in pursuit of policy objectives.”

“Thank you, let me begin with some sentimental appeals to our national myths. Then we’ll be moving directly into assorted cliches coined by the state. This ideological shorthand meant to sweep all your private doubts away.”

Then of course the very bold conclusion that “the state of the union… is…” (tears well up in eyes, people emotionally stirred into standing, flags flapping, stoic soldiers in the background)… “strong” (thunderous applause, star-spangled banner begins playing, a thousand doves are released into the air, a baby smiles, etc…)

Not that I watched, that’s just what I’m guessing.

Actually only about half the chamber was applauding Bush.

Barack Obama particularly had a pretty critical response to it.

  12. JOEPuD Says:

whos bush i thought this was about the american gladiators
wolf and titan are the raddest ones of ALL

  13. Justin Howard Says:

I really don’t understand this…people’s response to this in general. It doesn’t matter who’s running our country, someone will always find something that he/she is doing wrong. If America did do something about the genocide in Sudan or the Armenian genocide in Turkey SOMEONE would be pissed off, and probably say “Why are we poking our noses into other countries business”. And if we didn’t, people would say “This is something we (Americans) need to stop!”

If America should stop acting as the worlds police, then people should stop bitching about it when we do indeed put a stop to these heinous acts. Seems America is damned if we do and we’re damned if we don’t.

  14. zhx Says:

I wasn’t saying one way or another, I just thought it was funny that he got up and said “America thinks genocide is bad!”

  15. Jesse Says:

Howard is a fan of Bush

  16. JOEPuD Says:

  17. zhx Says:

Justin doesn’t seriously support Bush, does he? Or did you mean to type Busch?

One of those would just be disappointing; the other inexcusable.
