The Hardy Boys and the Case of the Broken CSS

Posted by zhx on April 10th, 2008 filed in All, Computers

It was pointed out to me last Tuesday that my site’s sidebar was relocating itself beneath the main content. Since last Tuesday was Microsoft’s patch day, I figured Internet Explorer received some upgrade that broke something; not the case.
My site (and many, many more) does not render correctly in Internet Explorer 6. This isn’t a [...]

Music Industry: “If You Can’t Beat ‘em…”

Posted by zhx on January 28th, 2008 filed in All, Computers, Music

From Times Online:
After a decade fighting to stop illegal file-sharing, the music industry will give fans today what they have always wanted: an unlimited supply of free and legal songs.
With CD sales in free fall and legal downloads yet to fill the gap, the music industry has reluctantly embraced the file-sharing technology that threatened to [...]

Delete Your MySpace Day, Anybody?

Posted by zhx on January 26th, 2008 filed in All, Blog Entries, Computers

If you haven’t heard already, the first annual delete your MySpace account day is quickly approaching. Do I have what it takes?
Despite the fact that I do all my blogging on…well, on my blog, and that Facebook is a vastly superior social networking platform and yes, I do only log in to delete spam friend [...]

Targeted Advertising

Posted by zhx on January 3rd, 2008 filed in All, Computers, Randomness

The advertising on Facebook is profile-specific (generally speaking). When I had “video games” in my activities, I got advertisements for upcoming games, an unfinished college education gets you advertisements for online accelerated degree programs and so on. Depressingly, if you’re listed as “single,” you get obnoxious ads for online dating services: “What? You’re single?? What [...]

Online Social Experiment Proposal

Posted by zhx on December 13th, 2007 filed in All, Computers

So here’s a brilliant idea I half created/half ripped-off earlier today:
There’s a ton of 2 girls 1 cup reaction videos floating around online in the past month or so (or whenever 2 girls 1 cup broke onto the scene), as watching peoples’ reactions to one of the internet’s most outrageous videos is just as entertaining [...]

Since the last time I installed Windows, back on December 30 of 2006, here are the statistics uTorrent has collected:
Total uploaded: 530gb
Total downloaded: 534gb
Total ratio: .993
Total running time: 329 days:17 hours:39 minutes:27 seconds (I guess my computer has been off for 11 days or so in the past year)
Total number of torrents added: 800

More OiNK

Posted by zhx on October 26th, 2007 filed in All, Computers, Music

News releases continue to pour out concerning the raid on OiNK, and I keep seeing the same incorrect information repeated.
OiNK was a community of music nerds that shared music because they love music. Its primary focus was most definitely NOT advance copies of albums. Sure they were available, but any idiot can track down an [...]

Employed

Posted by zhx on October 26th, 2007 filed in All, Blog Entries, Computers

Got hired on today at a computer repair shop in town. By “in town” I mean Portland proper, and it’s a bit of a commute, but it should be fun. I pretty much just fix computers, I start at a great hourly wage and have the opportunity to make quite a bit more as I [...]

Security Questions/Passwords

Posted by zhx on October 4th, 2007 filed in All, Computers

Just about everything online that requires a password incorporates this “security question” feature in one way or another, and it’s the dumbest idea ever.
1: Most places require you to enter “security questions” as a means of password retrieval or reset. They should be called “hack my account questions” since they’re always general questions that anybody [...]

New Power Supply

Posted by zhx on September 22nd, 2007 filed in All, Computers

So three blades somehow managed to snap off my computer’s power supply’s fan while I slept. One of which managed to wedge itself between the PSU’s housing and the remaining blades, which burned the motor up and when I awoke, my computer’s case was about a zillion degrees. I purchased a new power supply today [...]
