Giving Thanks

Sure, for Thanksgiving dinner I may have had a Kit-Kat bar and a Newcastle brown ale, but I got my Waffles.fm invite today! As the site’s only a couple weeks old, it’s no OiNK, but it’s quite a bit better than the two other private sites I joined post-OiNK. Time for some new music!

Best Band Name Ever

My Rock Bandmate and I spent a little time today perusing the online leaderboards to see how Smithereen is faring worldwide and ran across the best band name ever:
Blood Bath & Beyond
Dammit, why didn’t we think of that?

Rock Band is the New Karaoke

Rock Band was released today, and I’m fortunate enough to have a roommate who was willing to dump $160 on a single video game. He’s had it pre-ordered/paid off for months, and all we had to do was waltz into Game Crazy and pick the game up. If you have no idea what Rock Band [...]

These are the Times that Try Men’s Souls

Iron and Wine on December 2nd for $25 then Cake the next night for $35? That’s a lot of money for two concerts, so I consulted my priority list:

Rent
Iron and Wine/Cake
Beer
Food
Oh great, that works out perfectly.

“I’m Lookin’ for a Good Time” - The Breakthrough Hit Single from “Drunk Guy Downtown”

I went downtown tonight with a little MP3 player I have that has a built-in mic, hoping to record this acoustic guitar player I see playing the street corners from time to time (he’s really good). Well he wasn’t there, but another street performer was in his place. This guy, clearly about half-conscious, had a [...]

Vinyl May Be Final Nail in CD’s Coffin

This is a couple weeks old now, and had meant to post it when it was first published, but spaced it. Deal with it!
From Wired:

As counterintuitive as it may seem in this age of iPods and digital downloads, vinyl — the [...]

Amazing Show Last Night/Where Goest Thou, Troutmouth?

I’ve never seen an open mic night before, so I set out yesterday to track one down. I found an announcement for one just across the river on Facebook or Myspace or something and hopped on the train. But I got distracted: I realized if I got off four stops earlier I could stop by [...]

New Headphones/Beatles Bootlegs

As much as I love music, I’ve never owned a decent pair of headphones, and it was really starting to get to me. I also like making informed purchases, so I spent a couple nights online around audiophile forums and review sites to figure out what the nerds love for under $100. In the world [...]

Awesome Overload: The Hives

Best live show ever.
I’ve never seen a band with such crazy stage presence and energy, nor with the ability to fire up a crowd as well as The Hives. Everything was perfect, and trying to describe its awesomeness is futile.
More than worth the money, more than worth the wait. If The Hives go anywhere near [...]
